Wizkid’s position at the forefront of Afrobeats has largely been due to his incredible sense of timing. Every song and project has played into a bigger vision. Currently, that vision revolves around Morayo, the much-touted forthcoming album from the Nigerian superstar.

Today he’s released “Piece of My Heart,” his new single which features American R&B act Brent Faiyaz.

Produced by P2J and Dpat, it’s a sensual record that calls upon Wizkid’s artistic hallmarks as a love-eyed crooner. He’s perfectly complemented in this by Faiyaz, who introduces the song with his own smooth vocals. While Faiyaz tests the waters of feeling, singing with assurance that, “I could take you anywhere you wanna go,” it’s Wizkid who plunges deeper into the theme, creating a tension that makes “Piece of My Heart" an inherently sexier record. On his verse, Wizkid sings, “And if I ever hurt you, I mean well, what I gotta do to make you know it’s all real?” — quite sensational phrasing.

There’s also an ease carried in the production, which comes from the familiarity of the creative team around the single. An inventive moment comes from the beat switch that occurs just past halfway into the song, taking “Piece of My Heart” from a mellow drum base to a brooding R&B soundscape. That beat break allows Wizkid and Faiyaz to flaunt their versatility and chemistry.

In the accompanying visuals, that chemistry shines as both artists are set against a minimalist backdrop, with models and antique buildings contributing to a laid-back and elegant energy on-screen.

Evidently Wizkid is still digging deep into his creativity to unlock new pockets, and with the divisive opinions that have trailed the aftermath of More Love, Less Ego, there are a lot of expectations for Morayo. “Piece of My Heart” beautifully underplays the wait of what would be the singer’s seventh album, instead staying close to the singer’s truest motivations at this stage of his career.
