Laura Mvula Celebrates Phenomenal Women In Her New Maya Angelou-Inspired Single

It’s 2:59PM in Cape Town and Laura Mvula has rounded up the hands-down flyest crew of girls & guys to have a dance-off in the streets of Bo-Kaap.

The music video for Laura Mvula’s latest single “Phenomenal Woman,” a female anthem inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name, is basically the visual equivalent of pure joy and freedom. The track builds on a thumping beat and bass line as the singer belts out lyrics like “Nobody ever told her she was beauty, one day she realised she was already free.”

“I wrote this anthem to raise up our women,” the singer mentions. “We are the givers of life, we are the children bearers, the nurturers, the heroines, we are extraordinary in our ordinariness, we fly, we fight we are ‘Phenomenal Woman’.”

The uplifting visuals feature a cameo from Mozambican kwaito dance group Tofo Tofo (of Beyoncé “Run The World (Girls)” fame).

Watch the video for “Phenomenal Woman” below. Laura Mvula’s sophomore album The Dreaming Room is due June 17.

Kenyan artist Elsy Wameyo stands on a doorstep in the music video for her single “Conquer.”
