Ringing in the New: 10 British Artists to Watch in 2013

9. MC SSEGAMIC

"Oh check my clothes I wear chinos / Oh I'm such a lovely lad, if you could see me now, now" sings 25 year old Ssegawa Ssekintu Kiwanuka on this playful Clean Bandit track. Not to go all "rags-to-riches," but MC Ssegamic is not just talking about his burgeoning success as a singer/songwriter. Born to Ugandan parents, and schooled in Croydon (at Whitgift, the same as JB of JLS fame) Ssegamic is one of six-piece collective Clean Bandit whose refreshingly experimental soul has been steadily gaining in popularity (they were recently number one on the UK electronic chart). But Ssegamic is not just Clean Bandit's sometime frontman. In 2011 he was awarded the top-spot on the UK Future Leaders list of graduates, and he's currently completing a PhD in Engineering at Cambridge University, where the group met. His CV is no doubt a long list of accolades but we're only checking for his musical stylings . . . which are also pretty fine.
