The Apollo's Africa Now! South Africa Festival Oct 9-12 [Win Tickets!]

The historic Apollo Theater has partnered with the World Music Institute to present the four-day Africa Now! South Africa Festival October 9-12. The series runs in conjunction with a larger citywide celebration of the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's inauguration. We're giving away tickets to the Mainstage Concert on Saturday, October 11th, hosted by legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela and featuring performances from Xhosa songstress Simphiwe Dana, Soweto's new-wave a capella outfit The Soil, and Johannesburg hip-hop laureate Tumi Molekane. Enter your information below or head here for a chance to win a pair of tickets. Winners will be selected and notified via email on Thursday, October 9th.

In addition to the Mainstage Concert, the festival features four full days of shows, discussions, screenings, and more at the Apollo and various locations throughout the city. Below we highlight a few of the events slated to take place at the Apollo. Thursday evening at 6:30pm an "Apollo Live Wire" panel discussion, led by ethnomusicologist Gavin Steingo and featuring participating Africa Now! artists (Simphiwe Dana, Tumi Molekane, and members of the Soil), will look at changes in South Africa’s political and musical landscape since 1994. The event is free, though reservations are strongly suggested here. On Friday, October 10th, KwaZulu-Natal-born singer/songwriter/pianist Toya Delazy is set to bring her signature J.E.H.P. music ("jazz-electronic-hop-hop") to the Apollo Music Cafe at the Apollo Soundstage, just a few weeks ahead of her sophomore full-length release Ascension on October 28th (Delazy's latest single, the gospel-tinged, electro-anthem "Forbidden Fruit," arrived late last month). Following the Mainstage Concert Saturday night, urban-indie-jazz ensemble the Muffinz will perform an intimate set for the Apollo Music Cafe at the Apollo Soundstage. See the full Africa Now! South Africa Festival program here.
