An Unedited Look at Durban's Zakifo Music Festival
Durban-based photo-journalist Robyn Perros documents the grit and grain of one of South Africa’s newest music festivals.
The second-ever Zakifo Music Festival went down last weekend in Durban and featured performances from the likes of Songhoy Blues, Estère, Cold Specks, Inna Modja, The Brother Moves On, Mashayabhuqe KaMamba, Moonchild Sanelly, Blitz The Ambassador, Vusi Mahlasela and many more.
Durban-based photo-journalist, writer and artist Robyn Perros was on the ground at Zakifo. In the series of unedited images below, Perros sets out to capture the grit and grain of one of South Africa's newest music festivals with her Pentax K1000. She also shared a few thoughts on the festival with Okayafrica.
"Whether we admit it or not, we all want to be seen. And Zakifo should have been seen for what it was and what it is to be, by a great many more" says Perros. "I will remember Zakifo for having the opportunity to stand front row and inhale some of the most remarkable musicians in the world, like Songhoy Blues, Voudou Game, Inna Modja, Blitz The Ambassador, Maya Kamaty, Vusi Mahlasela and Kid Franscescoli. I will remember Zakifo for being able to get out of the surf, and walk across the road to listen to some of the best music in Africa – with the Indian Ocean still sticky on my skin. I will remember it for all the images I shot, even the dozens that didn't come out."
