Wizkid’s ‘Morayo’ Is Finally Here
The sixth studio from the Nigerian superstar strips back the celebrity allure and allows the music to take center stage.
Since the beginning of the year, Wizkid has stoked anticipation around the release of Morayo, an album he titles after his mother. She’s the adorable face on its cover, inherently giving a personal twist to the project. And since it’s coming more than two years after More Love, Less Ego, the teeming listeners of Wizkid are getting a buffet of sounds to satisfy their craving for new Wizkid music, even though he’s been quite productive with singles, features, and an EP during that time.
As earlier announced, the 16-track project features fellow Nigerian singer Asake, American artists Brent Faiyaz and Jazmine Sullivan, French rapper of Congolese descent, Tiakola, and French Gabonese act Anais Cardot.
Since Wizkid favors lived-in chemistry over stacking his projects with big names, this selection of artists is an interesting choice. With Morayo finally here, we can listen to the music and gauge how well he succeeds with the blending of his style and those of his collaborators.
The production room is also focused, with P2J handling the bulk of the sonic duties, collaborating on distinct songs with experienced hands with the likes of DJ Tunez and DAMEDAME*, the production duo most known for their work with English artist Jorja Smith. Afrobeats stalwart P.Priime turns in the production for “Time,” the second Wizkid and Asake collaboration after the Grammys-nominated “MMS.”
Boasting a straightforward rollout, Morayo signifies a new era for Wizkid, one where he’s more simplistic in the execution of his duties. It’s an album that strips back the celebrity allure, and just allows the music to take center stage.
It’s a thrill to say: Morayo is finally here. Listen below.
