Watch Nigerian Artist Simi's Own Version of 'Brown Skin Girl'
Simi shows us she's still queen of 'refixing' with her take on Beyoncé and Wizkid's hit single.
Before Simi became the artist she is today, she used to create some pretty dope "refixes" of hit singles. "Refixing", which is distinctly different from "remixing", was coined by house DJ Chew Fu who described it as changing the style or even the genre of an original song. Simi's last refix featured Skepta and Wizkid's 2018 single "Bad Energy".
The global impact that Beyoncé and Wizkid's single "Brown Skin Girl" from the album Lion King: The Gift has had, is irrefutable. From Lupita Nyong'o to the adorable Dream Catchers' viral video, it's clear that this song, and more especially its lyrics, affirms and continues to affirm, brown skin girls in every corner of the world.
In "Brown Skin Girlie-o", which Simi produced herself, the artist brings her Nigerian flavor to the original song and slows down the upbeat tempo just a bit. The short and relatively simple video opens with a number of young Black women individually dancing along to the song and towards the end, sees them all dancing together and just having a good time with one another. Perhaps it is the incredible simplicity of the video itself that makes it so endearing but we promise it's definitely worth the watch.
