Neneh Cherry's New Music Video Feels Like a 'Black Mirror' Episode
In the clip for "Natural Skin Deep," the Sierra Leonean-Swedish singer presents a striking commentary to society's addiction to technology.
Neneh Cherry is calling us all the way out in her new music video for "Natural Skin Deep." The Sierra Leonean-Swedish singer dropped the visual ahead of announcing two live shows to anticipate in the States this year, Pitchforkreports.
In the music video, we see Cherry sharply dressed in white and black making her way through the ins and outs of Beirut, Lebanon with a camera light posse in tow. The track that stems from her newest project Broken Politics was produced by Four Tet.
The Akinola Davies-directed clip is reminiscent of the eery technology/smartphone themed episodes in the Netflix sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror that show the consequences of experiencing the everyday through our smartphones. But according to Davies, this phenomenon is simply apparent at live concerts.
"There is a lot going on in video truth be told, I went to see Neneh play at Village Underground and everyone whipped out their phones to film her, so much so I got asked by this guy to move because I was in the way of his phone," Davies tells Rolling Stone. "Seemed quite ironic that the world is right here in front of us, really 360-degree drama. Instead of communicating through screens maybe we're all consuming it through screens."

Neneh Cherry is set to perform at Elsewhere in New York City on May 14 and in Los Angeles at The Hollywood Bow come Sept. 11.
