The official trailer for Queen & Slim, Melina Matsoukas' feature film directorial debut, has dropped—and it's a must-watch.
In the clip, you'll get a bit more of an understanding of the journey between the Black Bonnie & Clyde as well as the swelling of their love in the face of injustice.
Ugandan-British actor Daniel Kaluuya's performance is nothing short of striking, alongside his co-star Jodie Turner-Smith.
In Queen & Slim, also written by Lena Waithe, we follow a retail employee and a criminal defense lawyer get caught in an escalated situation with the police after a cute first date. Things go from zero to 100, where Slim (Kaluuya) kills the officer in self-defense. Both he and Queen (Turner-Smith) decide to go on the run in lieu of the incident going viral. The couple in turn become symbol of black love being a revolutionary act as they embark on a journey of self-discovery.
In an interview with Variety, Matsoukas hopes this film contributes to the discourse around the current political climate in America. "There's going to be people on both sides in this narrative and hopefully most are on the right side of history and that we're part of changing that narrative into a space that does justice for black people," she says.
Continuing:
"We created this film to honor those black lives, people who have lost their lives because of police brutality and try to bring that conversation to the table. But the main theme is love—and how in our community as black people that's our best power to fight against injustice."
