Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music Africa: 2 Days of Performances and Panel Discussions
The grand finale of True Music Africa will take place in Joburg in June.
Johannesburg will be the last stop for Boiler Room x Ballantine's True Music Africa, a four-city tour that unearths pioneering talent and their stories of hustling through the underground music scene to do it for themselves. The last three cities the tour has been to are Cape Town (South Africa), Douala (Cameroon) and Nairobi (Kenya).
The 2-day event will take place on the 20th and 21st of June.
The first day will consist of two panel discussions. Grace Ladoja, who is Skepta's manager, will kick off proceedings with a keynote discussion.
The two panel discussions on Day 1 will be:
1. Tech and culture
A discussion on how the digital age is helping Africa's creatives to innovate. On the panel will be: Kenyan True Music artist, Muthoni Drummer Queen, Phenda Kuta (founder of youth culture magazine, Unlabelled) and Sabelo Mkhabela (South Africa staff writer for OkayAfrica).
2. Club Culture in Africa
A discussion on how the evolving club cultures and new genres are challenging the typical venue set-up. The panel will include the journalist Boni Mnisi (This is What Makes Us Girls), Johannesburg based DJ, Doowap (YFM), Kenny Nzama (aka DJ Kenzhero) and Theresho Selesho (Matchbox Live CEO).
DJ Doowap and the Tembisa-based dance crew, Indigenous Dance Academy will also perform on the day.
On the 21st of June, dance music artist such as DJ Maphorisa, Moonchild Sanelly, Da Capo, Uncle Partytime and Symatics will perform.
