These African Educators Have Been Shortlisted For the Million Dollar 'Global Teacher of the Year' Award

A number of African educators have been nominated for the million dollar "Nobel Peace Prize" of teaching.

The Global Teacher of the Year Award sponsored by Varkey Foundation, largely considered the "Nobel Prize" of teaching, is an annual which recognizes excellence in teaching.

This year, a handful of African educators are shortlisted for the million dollar prize, including Professor Sitsophe Anku founder of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Catherine Nakabugo a math and science teacher from Uganda, and Abdikadir Ismail a teacher from Baragoi, a pastoral community in Kenya.

Two Nigerians, Todo Anthony and Ayodele Odeogbola, have also been shortlisted as well as two South Africans: Marjorie Brown and Wendy Horn.

Ertha Pond, a British athlete and physical education teacher who helped raise over $100,000 for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, has also been nominated.
