Watch Tems’ Jamaica-Shot Music Video for “Turn Me Up”
The acclaimed Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems continues to build the visual world of Born in the Wild.
Tems’ every move is calculated and inspired. The Nigerian superstar has enjoyed a quite prosperous year, following the release of her much-anticipated debut album. By now listeners are familiar with Born in the Wild, whose swashbuckling perspective is complemented by fine tones of Afropop, R&B, soul, jazz and even Caribbean influences.
“Turn Me Up” is one of the records on Born in the Wild that engages with the pomp of ragga sounds, and given the celebratory mood in the air, it’s fitting that Tems would share the visuals this time of the year.Directed by Loris Ruessier, the music video was shot in Jamaica, no doubt a nod to the sonic background of the single. With its famed natural scenes and quaint beauty, the country serves as a fitting muse for Tems and her well-built male counterparts.
In sync with the in-your-face energy of the song, the visual showcases Tems in all her sexiness, while adding some grit into the mix. This comes from the tight angles in which the architecture is presented, as well as the stoic faces of the men. But for much of the video, the focus stays on Tems, who achieves a larger-than-life persona through her movement on-screen.
The release of this visual follows the Nigerian musician’s three nominations at the forthcoming Grammy Awards, most remarkably for “Burning,” which is nominated in the Best R&B category. Clearly it’s been a steady climb towards glory for Tems and on “Turn Me Up,” she lets her hair down and just basks in the beauty of the moment.
