Take an Exclusive Look Inside "Fela Kuti and the Kalakuta Queens" the Musical
Check out the electrifying musical about Fela Kuti and his 27 wives.
Earlier this week, we posted about the Nigerian-based musical "Fela Kuti and the Kalakuta Queens" that takes a rare look into the relationship that the afrobeat pioneer shared with the 27 women he married in 1978.
The play is unique from other accounts of Fela's story, because playwright, Bolanle Austen-Peters, decided to focus specifically on the experience of the Kalakuta Queens. "It just occurred to me that nobody ever talked about the 27 wives that he had," Austen And I wondered who they were? I wanted to understand what informed their decision to marry one man, and what drove them. You know, what was their passion?"
The musical opened in December with the reopening of the Terra Kulture Arena in Lagos, which Austen-Peters is the creative director of, and closes this month.
If you weren't able to make it to thrilling show, don't fret. Below we take an exclusive look inside "Fela Kuti and the Kalakuta Queens starring Nigerian actor Olaitan "Heavywind"Adeniji as Fela.
