Spoek Mathambo’s Future Sound Of Mzansi Mix Series: Qgom Revolution
The latest in Spoek Mathambo's Future Sound Of Mzansi Documentary Mix Series features 45 minutes of Kwazulu Natal's Qgom subgenre.
Here's the latest installment in Spoek Mathambo's Future Sound of Mzansi mix series. The musical innovator is gearing up for the release of his and Lebohang Rasethaba’s documentary exploring South Africa's cultural landscape through the lens of electronic music. In the weeks leading up to the film’s July screening at the Durban International Film Festival, Spoek has promised to drop tapes featuring some of the best in futuristic music coming out of Mzansi. Last week we heard eccentric mixes devoted to Jozi’s Okmalumkoolkat and PTA's bacardi house hero DJ Spoko. Today Spoek treats us to a run-down of Kwazulu Natal’s Qgom style of music, which he describes as a “mysterious subgenre that is filled with its special quirks...lo quality MP3s...weirdly named songs...unlabeled MP3s and hard to find artists.” Listen to KZN's rhythmic takeover below.
