South African Rugby and Marvel are Teaming up for Superhero Sunday

According to Sport24, South African Super Rugby teams will be competing in their local derby matches whilst clad in kits inspired by the characters of the beloved Marvel entertainment brand.

The Superhero Sundaywill see South African rugby players from various clubs, taking to the field as the real-life superheroes who are trying to raise awareness and funds for an organisation called CHOC, a childhood cancer foundation. The superhero initiative is also an innovative way to try and increase the general hype around rugby as well as raise interest levels among its existing fans.

Speaking on the initiative, Jurie Roux, the CEO of South African Rugby said:

"Super Rugby has always been about entertainment and providing supporters with something new, and in 2019 we will definitely achieve that with this exciting endeavor with Marvel. The global rugby landscape is changing and teams across all continents are trying new things to further raise the interest of fans. We envisage reaching new audiences and gaining new supporters for our franchises and the game as a whole in South Africa."

The Lions' kit is inspired by Captain America, the very first Avenger who arose after the character Steve Rogers (a rejected military soldier) ingested some 'Super-Soldier' serum. The Bulls will be channeling their inner Spider-Man, the web-slinging superhero who is the primary protector of his city and its people. The Sharks' kit screams WAKANDA FOREVER as it channels the Afrocentric Black Panther superhero whilst the Stormers harness the power of thunder and channel Thor, the God of Thunder.
