After the colossal success of The Girl from St. Agnes and Tali's Wedding Diary, Showmax is currently busy with the production of their second original scripted comedy, Woke in Progress. The comedy series, which is being shot in Maboneng, Johannesburg, will star talents such as Lebogang Tlokana, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane and Kiroshan Naidoo. The series will be directed by the award-winning show-runner Rea Moeti whose short film Mma Moeketsi, which was inspired by the 2012 Marikana Massacre, has won awards at the Johannesburg, Cape Town and Zanzibar international film festivals.

Woke in Progress is set at The Maboneng Marble and follows the lives of two young women in their twenties who become unlikely roommates. The one young woman, Martie, is on a quest to find her biological parents after she finds out that she's adopted. Amandla, on the other hand, is trying to "reconnect with the motherland" after having followed her politician father across international posts. The streaming platform has described the show as an interesting mix between 2 Broke Girls and Dear White People.

Speaking about the upcoming series, Moeti said that, "When I first pitched Woke in Progress to Showmax, it was tamer than it is now, because I thought that was what South African platforms wanted." She added that, "But Showmax has pushed it to go further. So it's because of Showmax that the girls are as liberated as they are now."

Moeti brought on 2019 SAFTA winner for comedy and drama, Karabo Lediga, as well as animation writer Emma Lungiswa De Wet and film graduate Sipho Sondiyazi onto her dream team.Woke in Progress is set to air on Showmax on December 12th of this year.
