Seun Kuti And Nneka Celebrate Incredible Black Women In This New Music Video

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 share the long-awaited music video for their single “Black Woman,” off their third album A Long Way To The Beginning.

The brass-filled tune features vocals from Nneka and sees Kuti praising the “mind, courage and strength” of the black woman through encouraging lyrics. “I write this song for you (black woman), and I see everything you go through (black woman), that’s why me respect you (black woman).”

Black women take center stage in the 4-and-a-half minute visual—dressed vibrantly and dancing jubilantly to the song’s groovy beat and powerful message. Kuti celebrates black female icons by showcasing murals of his grandmother, Nigerian women’s liberation leader Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti along with Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, and Angela Davis.

Kuti stressed the importance of acknowledging our black heroes rather than purely idolizing Western figures last year in an interview with Okayafrica. “Black people need to find a way to begin realizing their real heroes. Not the heroes the media is imposing on us. It’s difficult but I also see that there’s a big victory there. A victory we can say we achieved on our own, without mainstream media, without anything –just through people power.”
