Nominations for the 2024 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) have just been announced, and there are a few big contenders in the mix. Founded in 2005, the awards “honor, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of South African Film and Television talent and productions, and… encourage entrepreneurship and the development of new talent within the industry.”

Yearly, the South African motion industry eagerly awaits to see who in their long list of service people shall be honored for their hard work, and this it’s no different this time around. Five new categories have been added this year — Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Special Effects in Hair and Makeup, and Best Original Songs for a Telenovela, TV drama, or Feature Film. The animation category has also been reinstated.

Thembinkosi Mthembu emerged the individual with the most nominations this year — four — for his roles in The River, Adulting, Shaka iLembe and Outlaws. Mpho Sebeng and Connie Chiume received posthumous nominations, the former for his roles in Miseducation and The Estate, and the latter for her role in the hit series Gomora.

Tshedza Pictures, which is the production company behind hits such as The River, Giyani and Legacy SA is leading with 29 nominations with films such as the Tebogo Malope-directed Outlaws getting 11, the same as The River. Trailing behind them are Burnt Onion productions, makers of Miseducation, with 22. The Bomb Shelter Film Company received 20 nominations, 17 of which are for 2023’s breakout hit, Shaka iLembe, one of them being a Best Actress nod for Nomzamo Mbatha.

Some other notable achievements include Haezer and Mandisi Dyantis, who have been nominated for their sound work on Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story.

The ceremony will hold on October 26 on SABC3 and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161). See the full list of nominees here.
