Ray BLK Celebrates Black Hair Salons in Her New Video 'Patience'
British-Nigerian artist, Ray BLK, celebrates black womanhood by way of the hair salon in her new music video "Patience."
British-Nigerian artist, Ray BLK, landed on our radar earlier this year when she became the first independent artists to win BBC Music's Sound of 2017 poll. We spoke with her about her dual Nigerian and British upbringing, tackling homophobia, and black British womanhood. The singer and MC spotlights the beauty of black womanhood once again in her new video "Patience."
The video is an ode to the black hair salon, which for many black woman is more than just a place where we go to get out hair laid, but also a safe space for us to nurture our personalities, beauty and style. The music video highlights the rich camaraderie of the hair salon that, in many ways, has become a symbol of black womanhood.
For many of us, visiting the hair salon can feel like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The video captures this essence as Ray BLK sings and rhymes about slowing things down for a change.
