Today we remember the life and ideas of Congolese anti-colonial leader and inaugural Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, who died 53 years ago. Seven months after delivering his fiery, unrehearsed Independence Day speech (which you can watch below) detailing the atrocities and injustices bestowed upon the Congolese people, Lumumba was assassinated by firing squad in a coup backed by U.S. and Belgian powers.
