Oscars Invite Nearly 400 New Members Including Nigerian Filmmakers and Writers

As in customary tradition, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has commenced its annual membership invitation process during the break between Cannes and the fall festivals. Today, the Oscars group announced that it has extended invitations to 398 distinguished artists and executives, one more than the previous year, recognizing their remarkable contributions to the world of motion pictures.

The comprehensive list comprises a diverse array of professionals spanning various disciplines within the film industry. Among the invitees are actors, directors, writers, producers, musicians, executives, artist representatives, publicists, and below-the-line contributors such as casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, film editors, makeup artists, hairstylists, production designers, and sound experts.

The 2023 class exhibits notable statistics, with 40% of its members being women. Additionally, 34% belong to underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, while 52% hail from 51 countries and territories outside the United States. A particularly intriguing aspect of this invitee class is that four branches have invited more women than men to join, namely casting directors, costume designers, makeup artists and hairstylists, and marketing and public relations. Furthermore, the Actors and Directors branches have a substantial number of candidates from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities.

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed their pride in welcoming these artists and professionals into the prestigious membership. They acknowledged the exceptional global talent exhibited by these individuals across different cinematic fields and their significant impact on the arts, sciences, and movie enthusiasts worldwide.

Noteworthy personalities among this year's invitees include veteran Nigerian actor Richard Eyimofe Evans Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD. He was also a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State in 2009. Producer, Jadesola Osiberu, a Nigerian writer, director, and producer, as well as the founder of Greoh Studios. Osiberu is renowned for her notable works such as "Isoken" (2017), "Sugar Rush" (2019), "Brotherhood" (2022), and "Gangs of Lagos," the first Nigerian original film exclusively streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, Nigerian writers Shola Dada and Kunle Afolayan, recognized for their remarkable contributions to "Anikulapo," and Nigerian director C.J. "Fiery" Obasi, acclaimed for films like "Mami Wata" and "Ojuju," are also among the notable invitees.

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, if all the invited individuals accept their membership, the total number of members, including Emeritus, would reach 10,817, with the voting members totaling 9,375.
