Moken's 'Your Sun Is Rising' Will Brighten Up Your Day
PREMIERE: Watch the new music video from the Cameroonian balladeer.
Moken is a Cameroonian singer who belts out songs in an unconventional and captivating baritone vocal delivery that makes it hard to not stop and pay attention.
The singer, who describes himself as an "avant-garde afro pop artist and balladeer," is readying the release of his new album Missing Chapters, a follow-up to 2016's Chapters of My Life, a record that saw Moken singing about his sudden migration to America and living out of his car in Detroit.
Today we're premiering the new music video for the optimistic single "Your Sun Is Rising," which follows Moken as he dances in a park. It perfectly encapsulates his left-of-center approach to his art.
"Your Sun is Rising is a message to everyone in the world who is lonely and waiting for love, to know that they are not lonely, that the sun that's rising every day in their lives is their lover who is rising with them to one day finally emerge in person," Moken tells OkayAfrica.
"[The song] is inspired by my addiction to a Sarah Vaughan cassette tape I had brought years back from Africa [and] played all my school years in Detroit, then rediscovered last year," he mentions. "It became a driving ritual [for me] because I had just bought a vintage Infinity that also had a cassette player with great sounding speakers. This was Sarah Vaughan collection was called 'The Divine One' just for her four octave incomparable unique vocal range... it was a cassette of the best of her love songs, and every time I [drove and would] sing along [thinking] about what is missing in my life, the lady and the love of my life."
