Listen to Lurah's new EP.
Cape Town-based rapper Lurah's recently released EP, New Drug 2, is a display of talent and flair. With songs like "For Kids on the Come Up," "Icon Hotel Nights (Interlude)" and "10K" among others, the project is a perfect soundtrack for the come-up as Lurah and his collaborators take you to the trap with them where they are doing their best to conquer the rap game and life in general.
Features on New Drug 2 are limited, and they include respected lyricist Ginger Trill, pioneering rapper Amilca Mezarati, Jiji Martin, LeoPr3ttyAugust, K-Tasso and Chinga Time. The latter appears on the project's lead single "Pop Off." The song's music video was shot by Motion Billy and shows Lurah, Chinga Time and their goons living carefree in the dingy streets of Cape Town.
Lurah and his guests cover various subjects that the ordinary young person will relate to. Being a street-centric rapper, Lurah maintains his confidence even when addressing intense topics like internal struggles and self-medication on the song "Take It Away."
Lurah is one of many young rappers from Cape Town who are changing the city's soundscape and are poised to become part of the national scene.
New Drug 2 is a sequel to New Drug, an EP Lurah released in 2016 on SoundCloud. New Drug 2 precedes Auto Truth, an EP he released in 2017. All three projects are great entries to a catalog that gets stronger with every successive release. New Drug 2 reveals a rapper who's ready for the big league, rapping effortlessly and making songs that can stand on their own but still sound great together.
Lurah has been hard at work, with the aid of the label he's signed under Boysinide. Before the release of New Drug 2, the rapper was dropping countless videos to promotional songs and freestyles, displaying a kind of hunger and work ethic your favorite wishes they had.
