Lupita Nyong'o Calls Questlove 'Best DJ on Earth'
“Thank you for the BEST DANCE PARTY EVER.”
Here’s your Friday feel good story:
After the 70th Annual Tony Awards Sunday, which saw all four musical categories awarded to actors of color —Leslie Odom Jr., Renee Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs for “Hamilton” and Cynthia Erivo for “The Color Purple” because black is synonymous with excellence—star of “Eclipsed” Lupita Nyong’o, the production's playwright Danai Gurira and cast mates hit up the "Hamilton" after party at Tavern on the Green in NYC to mark the historic night. This is ahead of the end of Tony-nominated “Eclipsed's" run on Broadway Sunday before it moves to San Francisco’s Curran Theatre next spring.
Apparently the party was lit AF—unsurprising as Questlove was on the ones-and-twos, and had Nyong’o still daydreaming about it four days later. Woah, wish I had been there. Next time…
“Twelve Years a Slave” breakout actress, Nyong'o penned a love letter of sorts to Questlove for Throwback Thursday, co-signing his incredible musicality.
Dear @questlove, you are THE. BEST. DJ. ON. EARTH. It has been 4 days since the #TonyAwards @hamiltonthemusical after-party, and I have not stopped smiling inside. Thank you for the BEST DANCE PARTY EVER. The #Eclipsedbway crew and I had the time of our lives. You gave us NO CHOICE but to take off our shoes, shed our clutches and scarves, drop our Tony and get moving around the pile, like the shrine of joy that it became! You switched genres, gliding back and forth and in and out like it was your first language. We shrieked at EVERY new song you wove into your mix. And we danced with grins on our faces until our bodies couldn't move any longer. And we still couldn't leave the dance floor because it was still too good, so we just swayed in place with our eyes closed. Eclipsed has been monumental for me. Thank you for making the celebration of that achievement UNFORGETTABLE.And now I will never go to another party unless you are DJ-ing.
With love and complete and UTTER admiration,
Lupita Nyong'o #happyfeet #tbt
Nyong’o’s IG kudos didn’t go unnoticed, it pretty much made Questlove’s day:
All those hours of practicing mixes. Matching keys and patterns. And small stuff y'all don't notice unless you have dog ears. THIS. IS. WHY. I. DJ.----for people to get and understand my quirky method. I have an ulterior motive in djn which is "I wanna teach you guys the world of music and how it fits" but do it in a way in which you don't know I'm doing that. It's finding a world in which #Drake & #Rihanna can find a world with #ThreeDogNight & #MarlenaShaw & in my world #RareEssense #LouisPrima #BrittneySpears #GaryBartz & #MajorLazer makes sense---and I want people walking away thinking and asking "why can't radio be like this?" (MORE ON THAT LATER #ahem)---but yeah this is ain't about celebrity worship more than it's about someone REALLY GETTING my deeper reason for djn--which was never about taking selfies w jawns in the booth and partoning em up for later (I HATE cats that use the DJ booth and studio for that purpose)----for those late to the party I did a mammoth 6 hour gig at Central Park on Sunday with the LOUDEST SPEAKERS ever and not one noise complaint (money doe$ talk up there huh?) 11pm to near 6am they danced like their lives depended on it. This has never happened in the 30 years of me DJing. This makes up for every "Ju f^^%%n suuuuuck!!!!" celeb quip flashback nightmare I've had. This makes it worth it.
Aww, it’s beautiful when black people love on each other.
