Ghana’s Lady Jay stomped her mark on the scene last year with the release of “Venus,” a wild single that pairs syncopated clicks with raw synthesizers into a sound she calls “trapzonto”—a blend of Southern U.S. trap influences and of azonto rhythms.
“It’s trap...African drums...and mood music,” Lady Jay told Okayafrica in an interview last year.
“Venus” sees Lady Jay and Ghanaian star rapper Sarkodiegoing in over producer Kuvie’s booming beat work.
Its accompanying music video is a striking affair that, among other crisp shots, shows Lady Jay spitting her bars with a live snake writhing around her neck and hair.
“I am badder than Erykah Badu,” she raps on the track, and she means it.
