J Hus Has Been Sentenced to Eight Months in Jail for Knife Possession

The rapper has been convicted following an arrest in June.

Gambian-Biritish grime rapperJ Hushas been sentenced to eight months in prison for knife possesion, reports BBC News.

The artist, neé Momodou Jallow, was arrested in Stratford London in June when police pulled him over near a shopping center, claming that they smelled cannabis. Police officers asked Hus if he was carrying anything illegal, to which the rapper admitted that he had a 10cm folding knife in his possession. When asked why, he responded: "You know, it's Westfield."

Hus pleaded guilty at a hearing in October after initially pleading not guilty.

In a letter read by his lawyer in court on Friday, the rapper wrote that he "fully accepted his actions were careless," referring to them as "ill advised" and "utterly stupid. He apologized adding that he "was not in the right state of mind." His lawyer stated that Hus had been attending therapy and that he was battling PTSD from being stabbed two years prior.

Judge Sandy Canavan, who presided over the case, told the 23-year-old rapper that he is a "role model to many" but "failed" to leave his past behind him."

"This, in such a young life, is the fourth occasion when you have gone out armed with a knife," she added. The star has six prior convictions for 10 offenses occurring between 2011 and 2016, according to NME.

The Mercury Prize-nominated artist released his debut album Common Sense in 2017, releasing the EP Big Spang in May.
