Trevor Noah Snags His First Emmy, Ava DuVernay and Common Win For '13th,' and More From The 2017 Awards

Part two of the Creative Arts Emmys went down last night in Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater. The creative arts portion of the Emmys, awards actors, filmmakers and crews in the areas of comedy, animation, variety, drama, limited series programming, reality, and documentary, ahead of the main Primetime Emmy event on September 17.
South African funnyman, Trevor Noah, won his first Emmy ever last night for Outstanding Short From a Variety Series for The Daily Show: Between the Scenes.
On Saturday, acclaimed director Ava DuVernay took home three awards for 13th, which garnered a total of eight nominations. During her acceptance speech for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Special, DuVernay sent a message to the families adversely impacted by mass incarceration.
“I want to thank, and think about tonight the hundreds of thousands of families who are waiting for their loved ones to come home,” she said. “Mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, who don’t know where their loved one is. Unsung heroes of a struggle that has not a lot to do with them, but has a lot to do with how they live each day.”
Rapper Common, also took home an award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for his song "The Letter to the Free." Comedian W. Kamau Bell won the Emmy for Best Unstructured Reality Program for United Shades of America.
