"Word To Fela": Jay Electronica Joins Don Jazzy, Reekado Banks and Di'Ja On 'Get Down'
Jay Electronica shouts out Fela Kuti in a new verse on Don Jazzy's latest single "Get Down," featuring Reekado Banks and Di'Ja.
Back in April, Jay Electronica surfaced in Nigeria where he was spotted visiting Mavin Records and spending studio time with Don Jazzy. Seems like the fruits of that meeting have now come to light in Don Jazzy's "Get Down," a new track that features a fresh verse from Jay Electronica, as well as contributions from rapper Reekado Banks and Sierra Leonean-Nigerian singer Di'Ja(both Mavin artists). "Get Down" sees Jay Elec delivering a Naija-heavy verse as he references the lyrics in Fela Kuti's "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" ("Lookin' for trouble, gon' find palaver/ Word to Fela") and claims "[I] spit it for the Hausa, the Igbo, the Yoruba." We could be seeing a lot more Mavin-Roc Nation collaborations in the future, as Jay Z recently confirmed he sent his cousin, and Roc Nation director of mobile strategies, to Nigeria to "discover new talent."
