Nigerian Mother/Daughter Labels Deola Sagoe & Clan At NYFW S/S15
Deola Sagoe and Clan present SS15 collection at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week (NYFW Spring/Summer 2015).
Presenting alongside their mother Deola Sagoe and her design label Deola, Teni, Tiwa, and Abah Sagoe introduced their Spring/Summer 15 CLAN collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York. Opening the show, CLAN debuted elevated street-wear designs that complimented the high-end, couture ideology of Deola. "It’s a beautiful and sophisticated line that’s more like a sister line to Deola. Deola is very high-end, very bespoke; while CLAN is more minimalist and appeals more to the day-to-day use," Sagoe told Okayafrica back in February before her F/W 14 showcase. Drawing her inspirations from Nigerian fabrics and silhouettes combined with western aesthetics, this season Deola Sagoe featured garments of detailed cut-outs and appliqués. "There's a lot of passion that goes into my designs. There's a lot of research; there's a lot of hard work and the creativity comes from my being inspired by absolutely anything ranging from something cultural [to] some mode of dressing," Sagoe explains. "What my colleagues have in the West, I don't have everything. It makes me that much more creative. When you have to create out of almost nothing, then you really, really have to invent. You set new standards, and you're able to push boundaries, and you're able to do almost anything your imagination can conjure." Check out what mother and daughters were able to conjure for SS15 in their latest show in the video below.
