Captain Planet Shares An Edit Of SBTRKT's 'New Dorp. New York'
'Gumbo funk' originator Captain Planet shares an edit of SBTRKT's 'New Dorp. New York,' featuring Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig.
The masked 'gumbo gunk' originator Charlie B. Wilder, better known as Captain Planet, has been keeping himself busy in the recent months following his globe-trotting sophomore album Esperanto Slang. This time he's sharing a new "bootleg" edit of SBTRKT's 'New Dorp. New York', the second single off the UK wonder-producer's well-received Wonder Where We Land LP which features vocals from Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig.
Captain Planet's edit is a masterful exercise in restraint, where the NY/LA producer adds just enough percussive elements to give the original tune a fresh tinge of African flavor. What's most enjoyable is the track's cracking snare, which adds an extra swing to the beat and calls to mind the infectious rhythmic structure of South African house music. To sweeten the deal, Captain Planet's also made the track available for free from his Soundcloud.
