Camagwini Regrets Choosing Money Over Love in Her First Single in 5 Years

Watch Camagwini's stunning music video for her single 'Dubai.'

South African Afro soul singer Camagwini has a new song out, after six years of not releasing new music. Titled "Dubai," the new single sees the artist muse on a bad decision she made in the past. She starts by recalling a lover she adored, but left for a moneyed partner.

She sings that she desired money and the customary baecation to Dubai. But the moneyed individual didn't treat her so great. She sings, "Ndandithi ndifun' umuntu onemali, ndifun' uy'eDubai, eDubai, wandinyisa."

"Dubai" has a rich Afro soul sound which gets even richer towards the end of the song when screeching electric guitars kick in. After all, Camagwini calls her music Afro rock. The music compliments her emphatic delivery and emotional vocals.

In the music video, the singer serves a variety of looks that compliment her trademark short hair and beads. When she's surrounded by friends poppin' bottles, she has an indifferent look on her face—her smile disappears as quickly as it appears, indicating a person whose mind is going through a lot. She then retreats to a desert and a beach, as if attempting to break free of all the pressures and letting go of her mistakes.

Camagwini last released music in 2013, when she dropped her third album Re-birth. She then went on a hiatus.

"I just went to the office and told them how I felt in the moment," she recently told SowetanLIVE. "They too did not understand, but respected the decision I made. They even said to me I could come back and work [with them]. Nothing hectic or emotional happened to me, I just wanted to live a normal life."

Camagwini was introduced to South African music fans with her debut album Zivile, which she released under the label Native Rhythms in 2008. Her sophomore Emandulo was released the following year.

"Dubai" is released by the house music label 4 Billion Records, which is also home to the rapper Red Button.
