Burna Boy, Angelique Kidjo, Trevor Noah & More Earn 2020 Grammy Nominations
Wizkid, Shatta Wale and more were nominated for their work on Beyoncé's 'Lion King: The Gift' while Mr Eazi earned a nod for his contribution to Bad Bunny and J Balvin's 'Oasis.'
The 2020 Grammy nominations have just been announced, and it looks to be a standout year for African artist.
Burna Boyhas earned his first-ever nomination in the (albeit dubious) 'Best World Music' category for his celebrated album African Giant. Speaking with Grammy.com about the vision for the album back in August, the artist said: My vision is just to...shine a light on a place and on people and a situation and everything that there hasn't been a light on for a long time."
In that same category is three-time Grammy winner Angelique Kidjofor her album Celia, which pays homage to the late Afro-Cuban legend Celia Cruz. Burna and Kidjo worked together on the track "Different" from African Giant.

Also nominated for Best World Music category are Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet for their release Fanm D'ayiti (Women of Haiti),Bokanté & Metropole Orkest (conducted by Jules Buckley) and Turkish rock band Altin Gün.
Also nominated for his work on J Balvin and Bad Bunny'sOasis isMr Eazi. He along with several artists includingWizkid, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade and Shatta Waleare also nominated alongside Beyoncé for their work on her The Lion King: The Giftalbum, which was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album amongst others.
South African funnyman Trevor Noah, who recently became the first African artist to sell-out NYC's Madison Square Garden, also earned a nomination in the Best Comedy Album category for "Son of Patricia."
Rapper, singer and flautist Lizzo is the most nominated artist this year with nine to her name.
While the Grammys are often criticized for nominating the same African artists (and lumping them into one eye roll-worthy category known as the "Best World Music") the inclusion of African Giant and other works from African does reflect an acknowledgement of the cultural influence of contemporary African pop music.
The 2020 Grammys are scheduled to air on January 26. See the full list of nominees below:
