Bobi Wine Supporter Allegedly Killed by Ugandan Police During a Demonstration

One person has been reported dead after Ugandan police reportedly attempted to disperse a crowd of Bobi Wine's supporters, according to the BBC.

The incident took place yesterday in the capital city of Kampala where the musician-turned-politician was planning to resume his consultative meetings at the Pope Paul Memorial Community Centre in Ndeeba, a neighbourhood in Kampala.

The Daily Monitor reports that Ugandan police attempted to bar Bobi Wine from entering the venue because he had allegedly "not fulfilled some of requirements agreed upon at an earlier joint meeting with Electoral Commission officials and police".

In an attempt to "restore order" amid a disgruntled crowd that had begun demonstrations, the police allegedly ran over and killed one of Bobi Wine's supporters. The police have, however, denied allegations that they intentionally knocked down the supporter.

Bobi Wine has argued that he had in fact written to the Ugandan police informing them of his intention to resume with his consultative meetings in preparation for his 2021 presidential bid.

While the police acknowledged that they had indeed received the letter, police spokesperson Fred Enanga went on to say that, "I have to get a response from the director of operations, which I have not seen. When I see it, I will give a position from police as required by the law."

The opposition leader has also accused the Ugandan police of continuously disrupting any planned gathering of his supporters.

Since confirming that he would be running against longtime President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 elections, Bobi Wine has been arrested on numerous occasions with several of his supporters and followers of the People Power Movement, including fellow musician Ziggy Wine, having been killed last year allegedly due to political motivations.

Bobi Wine, along with other public figures, members of the media and activists including Stella Nyanzihave been targets of the Ugandan government's crackdown on political dissent.
