'Blood and Water' is the Second Original South African Series by Netflix

The teen-led series will be directed by award-winning Black girl magic, Nosipho Dumisa.

Netflix was not playing around when they announced that they would be investing into more Afrocentric content. They have an original Malawian dramaThe Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and now two original South African series. Blood and Water, follows shortly after Queen Sono, which stars actress Pearl Thusi.

This youthful series will follow the story of a teenager who discovers shocking secrets about her family's past whilst trying to navigate life in the often times complex world of a South African high school. The series will begin production this year and will only be launched officially some time next year.

Speaking on her latest project, Nosipho Dumisa said:

"Gambit Films and I are so excited to be working with Netflix on this explosive young adult drama, with not only a cool look at strong female leads but also a powerful mystery at its core. As a director who loves genre, this series combines the best of so many and isn't shy to delve into the real issues of youth culture, whilst jam-packing it with twists that will keep viewers guessing."

Whilst the cast of the series has not yet been revealed, it's rumored it will comprise of several fresh faces and new talent. Its notable director, Dumisa, has made international waves with her gangster thriller Nommer 37 which resulted in her winning the top prize at the Fantasia International Film Festival for Best Director. The film also received a riveting review from the New York Times.
