Burna Boy, Maglera Doe Boy, ODUMODUBLVCK, Blxckie Nominated for BET Hip Hop Awards 2024

Strong African representation at the forthcoming awards show demonstrates the genre’s standing on the continent.

BET has announced the nominees for its BET Hip Hop Awards 2024. A particularly exciting year, it’s been getting attention for its strong representation of women in the Hip Hop Artist of the Year category. However, in news closer to home, African acts are also in the running for plaques this year.

The biggest name on the African roster is unarguably Burna Boy, who was nominated in the Best Live Performer category. The Nigerian superstar will be up against international acts which include Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Busta Rhymes, Megan Thee Stallion and more.

Burna definitely stands a strong chance, with his intercontinental tours selling out and his Afrofusion sound reaching global audiences through vibrant and memorable showcases.

On the hip-hop front, ODUMODUBLVCKgets an inevitable nomination in the Best International Flow category, a podium he shares with the South African duo of Maglera Doe Boy andBlxckie. They compete with acts that include the U.K.’s Ghetts and Stefflon Don, among others.

Earlier this year, in July, a host of African artists recorded fine returns in the general BET Awards. Tylawon Best International Act and Best New Act; her fellow South African Makhadzi won Best New International Act; and for her uplifting record “Me & U,” Nigerian star Temswon the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel / Inspirational Record.

If the BET Hip Hop awards are anything like the general awards, we should be celebrating the wins of another list of African artists. Scheduled to start on October 8, the show will premiere on October 15, and will be held in Las Vegas for the first time.

“BET is excited to bring BET Hip Hop Awards to a city known for its electrifying atmosphere and rich history of awe-inspiring entertainment,” said Scott Mills, the president and CEO of BET, in a statement. “From the groundbreaking performances of legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Lena Horne, who shattered racial barriers, to today’s leading and emerging artists, Las Vegas’ vibrant energy reflects the innovation, soul, and storytelling that Black culture continuously contributes.”
