Audio: Chashe Musarurwa 'Dhi' [LP Download]
Boston-based, Zimbabwean music from Chashe Musarurwa on her debut LP 'Dhi' (produced by multi-instrumentalist Sam McTaggart).
Boston-based Zimbabwean singer/songwriter Chashe Musarurwa has thought a lot about love. Her debut album Dhi, produced by multi-instrumentalist Sam McTaggart, considers, among other things, how love can be all consuming to the point of irrationality (as in title track "Dhi"), how it can add zest to the occasionally mundane business of living ("Golden") and how it can nestle unrequited ("Must Be Crazy"). You won’t find too many people complaining though; it all makes for some delightful afro-pop grooves.
A graduate from the songwriting programme at Berklee University in Massachusetts, she says her childhood in Harare was soundtracked by Oliver Mtukudzi, Bob Marley, Brenda Fassie and Destiny’s Child. “What I gravitate to now is a real mix of things” she adds, “and what all these artists have in common is the ability to get a crowd dancing 'til they drop, as well to provoke thought and awareness about important social issues”.
