In the last decade, the amapiano genre has seen an explosive expansion the world over. In June, Spotify relaunched one of its playlists, Amapiano Hits, which had arguably aided in the global explosion of the sound during lockdown. The relaunch consisted of a neighborhood tour by Focalistic, a producer’s workshop during which Uncle Waffles’ producer, Tony Duardo demonstrated his workflow, and a launch night that featured live performances.

Elsewhere, Red Bull Symphonic performed music by the self-styled King of Amapiano, Kabza De Small, at a sold-out event held at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg. The 33-piece symphonic orchestra and 8-piece choir did sweltering renditions of hits such as “Khusela” and “Imithandazo.” This happened under the masterful conduction of Ofentse Pitse.

Sonically, there has been a dominance of quantum sound ever since songs like “Habibi” and “Bhebha” introduced the sub-heavy morphology of amapiano. There’s also been a hybridization with 3-step and gqom, as witnessed on DJ Lag’s latest work, for example.

For those looking for mixes to bump at any time of the day, Scorpion Kings’ Boiler Room mix is satisfying, this Djy Jaivane mix from a few months ago will refresh your senses, while this back-to-back session between DBN Gogo and Tyler ICU is potent enough to keep groovers on their toes.

That said, these are the Best Amapiano Songs of the Year So Far.
