CNN On Zambia's 'Rebellious' Youth Cultures
CNN's series 'Inside Africa' looks at the growing skateboarding and tattoo scenes in Zambia, but the video is almost as condescending as it is informative.
If we're being completely honest, this video is getting posted at least a little bit for the lols. CNN's 'Inside Africa' series has most recently done a profile piece looking at the emerging rebellious youth cultures in Zambia, including skateboarding and tattooing. Let's be clear — the subjects of the video are absolutely not what we think is funny — it's really awesome to see growing subcultures in Zambia get some shine. It's just that host Errol Burnett's incredulous interview style about very simple matters — "so the needle is essentially stabbing his skin?" — makes the whole thing feel ridiculous. We're all for explorations of culture and the challenging of traditional values, and if you're too, this video is definitely worth the short watch. Just don't get too put-off by the host's feigned surprise at every turn, the terrible tattoos (no hate, just sayin'), or the Rick Ross tee hanging in the background of the tattoo parlor. Don't say we didn't warn you.
