Prêt-À-Poundo: Loza Maleombho's Baroque-Inspired Collection

While spring is just starting, the fashion world is brimming with striking & astonishing fall pieces and looks. As statements pieces make their comeback for A/W 13, Loza Maleombho's trendy and colorful combination of kente fabric, rich bazin and lace marks the line's individual character. The contrast of solid colors and stripes in Maleombho's collection keeps the focus on a bright center — you don't have to dress up this attire as the outfit will stand out for you. Malheombo A/W 13 is an exclusive must-have collection, from stunning one-of-a-kind pieces to intricate architectural features.

Maleombho remains strong on her African textile influences, shaping her materials and fabrics from Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire into bold and original pieces. Another strength of the designer is her approach at maintaining a balance between masculinity and feminity. Our favorite piece is the cape collar, which begs: Go bold with statement pieces. We spoke with Loza about her new collection below.

What was your inspiration for this new collection?

Early 19th century/baroque meets modern urban fashionista

What materials did you use?

Kente fabric (handwoven 100% cotton from Ghana), rich bazin (100% Cotton dyed and starched for shine and stiffness) and lace (100% cotton).

What's the masterpiece of this new collection?

The trench coat.

How are your feeling now that your collection has been released?

I feel like I just gave birth to a baby and I am already brewing the next one.

Which African singer or band would you like to see wearing one of your pieces?

Rokia Traoré or Angelique Kidjo.

What do you think are the current trends for A/W 13?

I wanna say the trend of the Church. From Valentino and Alexander Mcqueen amongst others who are recalling the robes of cardinals, monks, nuns and priests as mentioned in Elle UK. You can recall that trend in our autumn/winter collection as well.

What tips do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

Have a strong business plan, a clear vision and never lose sight of it.

Describe your A/W 13 collection in one word.

Quirky.

A word about Okayafrica.

Dope.
