AFRICA IN YOUR EARBUDS #15: OLUGBENGA

Lagos raised, London based Olugbenga plays bass in UK electro-pop outfit Metronomy and crafts his own experimental solo concoctions. For our fifteenth installment of Africa In Your Earbuds, he integrates influences from a Nigerian childhood with modern grime cuts from his global contemporaries.

In AIYE #15: By Day I Am Nothing, By Night I Am Myself Olugbenga streamlines through a club floor-meets-cave lounge mix that pairs some of our favorite Nigerian artists — eLDee, D'banj, Zara Gretti, Seun Kuti — with the likes of Seye, M.I.A., and Clams Casino. In his words:

This mix is meant to come from a dozy 1 AM place. Songs run into one another, people you know intimately rub shoulders with people like MIA, time feels elastic and it's perhaps a little eerie.Without really intending it when I set out, the second half of the mix has a definite political dimension to it too. It's the first thing I've done post-Occupy Nigeria, so I guess it's not that surprising. No surprise too that Seun Kuti puts it all in a much more compelling fashion than I can.

Stream and download AIYE #15: By Day I Am Nothing, By Night I Am Myself below! Huge props to Underdog for the incredible cover artwork! Catch Olugbenga on tour in the US & Canada with Metronomy.
