Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has joined the ownership group of San Diego FC (SDFC), becoming a Partner in the Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team through her company, The Leading Vibe. The investment is made in partnership with Pave Investments, an African private investment firm, with Pave's Tunde Folawiyo and Kwamena Afful also joining the ownership group.

"I am thrilled to join San Diego FC's ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and the power of community," Tems shared in a press statement. "Football has a unique way of bringing people together, and I am excited to help build something special in San Diego."

SDFC CEO Tom Penn welcomed the partnership, stating, "Tems is an extraordinary artist and cultural force worldwide. We are honored to have her join our club and bring her visionary perspective to San Diego FC. Her passion for empowering the next generation aligns perfectly with our mission."

Tems joins a diverse ownership group that includes actress and producer Issa Rae, former Spanish footballer Juan Mata, retired U.S. Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, and MLB star Manny Machado as part-owners. The group reflects San Diego FC's vision, which includes initiatives related to youth development and international talent, such as its partnership with the Right to Dream Academy.

San Diego FC will make its MLS debut on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, against LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park, with its first home game scheduled for March 1, 2025, at Snapdragon Stadium against St. Louis CITY SC.

The trend of high-profile figures investing in sports teams has accelerated in recent years, with examples including Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's purchase of Wrexham AFC, LeBron James' stake in Liverpool FC, and Serena Williams' involvement with Angel City FC.

Tems, who recently won her second Grammy award in February, has established herself as a global music powerhouse. Known for hits such as "Free Mind" and "Higher,"she won her latest Grammy for "Love Me JeJe." She previously received one for her collaboration on Future's "Wait for U." She also earned an Academy Award nomination for co-writing Rihanna's "Lift Me Up," the lead single from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
