Ayra Starr is very much allergic to bad vibes. The Nigerian singer plainly sang as much on “2 Sugar,” her collaboration with Wizkid, and she’s reiterating it profoundly on her new single, “Bad Vibes.”

Ayra Starr’s personal conviction is the foundation of her compelling artistry, and “Bad Vibes” melds undiminished confidence, spiritually-backed assurance, and shades of introspection into a resonant anthem. “Give me the world but it’s heavy on my palms,” she sings, one of several ruminative lines that highlight the clarity of her expressions.

The chorus—“No dey throw bad vibes / where the money dey is where I’m at”—echoes the core Ayra Starr tenet of focusing on herself and ducking any negativity. Street-pop luminary Seyi Vibez delivers an apt second verse, combining self-reverence and spiritual veneration on the song’s second verse.

Ayra Starr returns for a third verse, where she slips into a smooth rap-adjacent flow, the drums in Mystro’s mellow groove disappearing for a few seconds, emphasizing every self-assured line.

“Bad Vibes” ups the expectation for Ayra Starr’s upcoming sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21, scheduled to drop May 31, you can pre-order it here.
