In a recent episode of The Getaway, Esquire Network's new travel series, Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def takes in the sounds, sights, and tastes of Marrakesh, Morocco. First, Bey hears Gnawa music which, as an interviewee explains, comes from "sub-Saharan African slaves" and involves "just singing the lyrics to explain the pain." Later, the Brooklyn-born, recently South Africa-based rapper/actor takes a midnight journey ("Don't let that sound dubious to you," he assures) into Jemaa el Fna, a bustling square of music, snake charmers, and food that is particularly known for its orange juice.
