Cyclone Kenneth Has Made Landfall: It is the strongest storm to ever hit Mozambique

Yesterday, Cyclone Kennethmade impact with land in the northern parts of Mozambique. Cyclone Kenneth is the first tropical cyclone to reach category 4 hurricane status in the last 60 years. The cyclone follows the devastating aftermath of Cyclone Idai a little over a month ago. Over 30 000 people were evacuated in the areas most likely to be hit and no deaths have been reported as yet.

Forecasters predict that Cyclone Kenneth will be slow-moving and that double the amount of rainfall, that flooded the southern city of Beira during Cyclone Idai, is expected in Cabo Delgado. Alarmingly, waves on the north-eastern shores of Mozambique are also expected to be higher by as much as 5 meters (16 feet). Three people were killed after the cyclone hit the island of Comoros.

According to AccuWeather, Marc Nosbach,CARE Mozambique's country director said:

"At least 700,000 people are at risk within the region of Cabo Delgado. Aside from storm damage, the greatest risk will immediately be from flooding due to heavy rains. Rivers within this region of Mozambique may flood, especially as at least one of the dams is already close to full capacity, preventing flood water from being retained. This will make it almost impossible to distribute aid as roads will become impassable."

Tanzanians were also advised to move to higher ground as the cyclone was anticipated to hit the southern parts of the country. However, according to the regional commissioner Gelasius Byakanwa, the path of the cyclone has changed and will no longer cause a disaster. In spite of this, schools and businesses remain closed.
